Heuchera, Tiarella and Heucherella -- nearly evergreen in the Chicago area -- are mostly grown for their colorful foliage, though some -- especially the Tiarella and Heucherella -- also have striking flowers. All are relatively tolerant of shade, and often planted to give some zing to shade gardens, or under/around larger perennials. Many of these cultivars also do well in full sun!
Deer don't prefer them (though mine nibble them), and they are non-allergenic. And, there's (at least) one for every color of the rainbow! What's not to like?
