Heritage River Birch
Betula nigra 'Cully' HERITAGE
Soil Preference: Birch trees have a very shallow root system, so they are sensitive to even short periods of drought or heating of the soil and to root compaction because of high traffic around the plant. Plant your birch where the soil will be shaded, cool and moist. The challenge is finding a site where the soil will remain cool and moist, but where the tree will also receive plenty of sunshine. Birch prefer slightly acidic (5.0-6.5) soil. The white-barked and paper birch are most tolerant of alkaline soils.
